Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
PROCESS OF AUSTRALIA Skilled Independent VISA & ADMISSION
This visa is for invited workers and New Zealand citizens with skills we need, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. There are number of steps involved in this process including:
- Check whether your occupation is on the skill occupation list. If you have at least 65 points, you are eligible to apply
- Submit an expression of interest in SkillSelect
- Wait for invitation to apply for this visa
- Gather your documents
- Apply for visa within 60 days of invitation
Application conditions:
- You must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia.
- Have an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
- Have a skills assessment for the occupation
- Be aged under 45
- Have at least 6 in all bands in IELTS
- Score 65 points or more
- Submit EOI and get invited to apply for the visa

Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
PROCESS OF AUSTRALIA Skilled Independent VISA & ADMISSION
This visa lets nominated skilled workers live and work in Australia as permanent residents. There are number of steps involved in this process including:
- Check whether your occupation is on the skill occupation list. If you have at least 65 points, you are eligible to apply
- Submit an expression of interest in SkillSelect
- Wait for invitation to apply for this visa
- Gather your documents
- Apply for visa within 60 days of invitation
Application conditions:
- Have an occupation on the STSOL/ MLTSSL list
- Have a skills assessment for the occupation
- Be aged under 45
- Have at least 6 in all bands in IELTS
- Score 65 points or more (including 5 points of state nomination)
- Submit EOI and get invited to apply for the visa
How to get the nomination from the state government?
Every state nominates different occupations. In most cases, you will need to have related work experiences. Additional conditions are required for some occupations. It depends on the criteria of each state.
*Successful applicants must stay in the nominated state for two years.
