Can I study a master’s degree in IT without related background?

Actually, many Australian universities provide Master of Information Technology or Master of Information System for graduates either with or without a background in related majors. Students without an IS background are taken through foundational topics in their first year of study, leading them into the second year which deals with more advanced material.

Master of Business Information Systems

Applicants must have either:

  • A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0; or
  • A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with minimum GPA of 4.0/7.0 and at least 3 years of full-time equivalent years of professional experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program; or
  • A Bachelor (Honours) degree or international equivalent with minimum GPA of 4.0/7.0; or
  • A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with minimum GPA of 4.0/7.0 and a Graduate Certificate with minimum GPA of 4.0/7.0; or

The minimum academic requirement for full entry and enrolment is a Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 (if supplemented with 3 years of relevant work experience).

Master of Information Systems

  • Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline, with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent.
  • In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider prior academic performance.

Master of Information Technology

Depending on your work experience and undergraduate qualification, you may be eligible for credit to the course to reduce it to either an 18 month (150 point) or 12 month (100 point) full-time program.

1.200 point program

This degree is for students without work experience. The first 50 points (one semester equivalent) of subjects are chosen to fill in gaps in knowledge from your prior course of study.

  • Any undergraduate degree
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent *
  • One technical subject focused on computer programming (taken at any tertiary year level)
  • Include a detailed syllabus for any programming subjects undertaken. Your syllabus must contain as much detail as possible so that you can be assessed for entry into the program.

2.150 point program

Up to 50 points of credit may be awarded to applicants who have:

  • A three-year undergraduate degree with a major in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or related discipline
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%) or equivalent

3.100 points

Up to 100 points of credit may be awarded to applicants who have:

  • A four-year undergraduate degree with a major in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or related discipline
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%) or equivalent *
    and either:
  • Studies in the area of specialisation at an advanced undergraduate level or higher
    or
  • Two years of documented relevant work experience in the area of specialisation.

Master of Computer Science

  • An undergraduate degree with a major in Computer Science or equivalent
  • A weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%), or equivalent
  • At least 25 points of university level mathematics or statistics subjects.

Master of Software Engineering

For the students who do not have academic background of software engineering, you will be eligible to enter the 3-year program if you hold any undergraduate degree with:

  • The equivalent of 25 points (two subjects) of first year mathematics (any)
  • The equivalent of 25 points (two subjects) of first year computing, computer science programming (or equivalent)
  • With a weighted average mark of at least 65%, or equivalent

Master of Information Technology

An applicant is required to have:

  • an Australian bachelor’s degree in information technology with a credit average (65 percent), or equivalent qualification or
  • an Australian Bachelor of Engineering degree with a credit average (65 percent) and a major sequence of study in computer engineering, software engineering, or equivalent qualification or
  • a University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or Graduate Diploma in Computing, with a credit average (65 percent). Units completed in the graduate diploma/graduate certificate can be credited to the master’s degree.

Master of Information Technology Management

  • an Australian bachelor’s degree in information technology or information systems with a credit average (65 percent), or equivalent qualification or
  • an Australian Bachelor of Engineering degree with a credit average (65 percent) and a major sequence of study in computer engineering, software engineering, or equivalent qualification or
  • an Australian bachelor’s degree in an unrelated discipline with a credit average (65 percent) and two year’s professional work experience in the information technology industry, or equivalent qualifications or
  • a University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Information Technology Management or Graduate Diploma in Computing, with a credit average (65 percent). Units completed in the graduate diploma/graduate certificate can be credited to the master’s degree.

Master of Data Science

Applications for enrolment in Semester 1, 2023 are currently closed but will re-open later in the year. Enrolments for Semester 2, 2022 are currently open.

An applicant is required to have:

  • a four year Australian bachelor’s degree with honours in a quantitative discipline* with a minimum credit average (65 percent), or
  • an equivalent qualification with a research component or an Australian master’s degree in a quantitative discipline* with a minimum credit average (65 percent), or equivalent qualification, or
  • the University of Sydney Graduate Certificate in Data Science with a minimum credit average (65 percent), or equivalent or higher qualification

Admission to this program requires one of the following:

  • A 3-year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian Bachelor degree in a discipline containing 3 courses of second-year university level mathematics or equivalent, and a minimum 65% average; or

Master of Information Technology
